Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
