Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
